Goddess Matangi – Story of Shiva and Goddess Matangi

Goddess Matangi is one of the Dasa Mahavidyas. She is a manifestation of Goddess Parvati. Some scholars also associate her with Madurai Meenakshi. The popular legend associated with Goddess Matangi suggests that she took the form to teach Shiva a lesson as he had tried to trick her through a change in his form.

Legend has it that Goddess Parvati once went to her father’s home. Shiva could not tolerate the absence of Goddess Parvati. He grew jealous and took the form of an ornament vendor and visited the palace of Parvati’s father.

Goddess Parvati brought some bangles from the vendor. When asked its price, the vendor asked to pay it with sexual favors. Goddess Parvati immediately recognized that the merchant was Shiva who was to test her fidelity. She agreed to do sexual favors but at an appropriate time.

To teach Shiva a lesson, Goddess Parvati appeared in the form of a Chandala Girl – a member of the hunter community – before Shiva while he was doing his evening prayers.

To attract Shiva, she performed a seductive dance. Enamored by her beauty, Shiva enquired who she was. She said she reached the spot searching Shiva and she was attracted by his beauty.

Shiva and the Chandala Girl then decided to make love. But during the love making, Goddess Parvati transformed him into a Chandala. Immediately, Shiva realized that the girl was Goddess Parvati.

Goddess Parvati then said that this will be one of her permanent forms and she will also be known as Ucchista Chandalini.

The skin color of Goddess Matangi is greenish blue. She is associated with Tantra Kriyas. She is associated with magic and Indrajal. She is the custodian of the complete knowledge of Tantra.  She is the goddess associated with all forms of sound, music and fine arts. She is also associated with Sidh Vidya.

With her sound, she controls all living beings and keeps a check on those who are inclined towards Adharma.

She is also associated with Vashikaran and Sammohan Vidya.

On earth, Goddess Matangi is the daughter of Matang Muni.

She is also known as Ucchishta Chandalini.

She has three eyes and four arms. She wears crescent moon on her forehead.

She holds veena and skull in the right hands. The upper left hand holds sword and the lower left hand is in Abhaya Mudra.

She is always seen with a parrot.

She keeps chanting the Beeja Mantra Hreem.

She is propitiated by couples having sexual compatibility and other problems.

She also fulfills desires related to sex and love.
